Not Shocking: Childcare in NY is Expensive

Have you considered childcare? Do you currently have your children in daycare or in the care of a nanny?

I realize the cost of childcare is a conversation that most parents have - especially those parents deciding if one parent should stay home to be the primary caregiver. According to a recent 2009 study by the National Association of Child Care Resource & Referral Agencies (NACCRRA), New York State ranks near the top of the list with the least affordable child care center costs in the nation (based on 2008 data). What a shock! The average cost of full-time infant care is $13,630 per year in NY State. The study also reports that quality child care is even more expensive with "accredited" care costing 30% more. For quality daycare in NYC, these annual costs can be nearly double the $13,630 average! One accredited daycare center that I explored a few months ago, charges $1,900 per month or $22,800 per year. The extensive NACCRRA study includes comparative data by state and provides research findings about how childcare expenses are higher than most other household expenses like food, and how challenging the costs are for single parents.

  1. Wait until they get to be 5. Have you looked at the cost for private elementary school? And the private school year ends earlier than public so for $34,000 you get 9 months of education. With a student teacher ratio of 15:1.
Whereas a preschool runs for $23,000 a year and ratio of 5 students per teacher, preschool sounds like a steal.
