Mothers are Primary Breadwinners or Co-breadwinners in Nearly Two-Thirds of American Families

I was preparing our son's dinner on Friday evening when my dad called and said, "put on CBS News...there is another story about an at-home-dad" (in New Jersey) forced into his role because of the economy. I loved it when the son in the segment had said, "he loved having dad at home", and the mom replied, "I'm sure he does because he's a lot more lenient than me!"

Seth Doane reported that Women are Half of all U.S. Workers & that Mothers are Primary Breadwinners or Co-breadwinners in Nearly Two-Thirds of American Families! The full CBS News segment is below. I am still thinking about a quote from the segment- that it is "hard for mothers to redefine their role." I guarantee it is! Consequently, isn't it just as challenging for the fathers to redefine their role as well?

  1. great segment lance which prompts thought and discussion. it made me think of a few things i've had floating around in my head for some time now...

i think it is very difficult for both parents in the redefinition of their roles. but, i can't help think about my wife and how much she would rather be the one staying home with our daughter. not to sound chauvanistic, but mothers are the instinctually maternalistic partners in this relationship. one thing i've wondered since being at home with my daughter is what effect this situation is taking on my wife. i wonder if by the nature of the economy, we are robbing the maternal bonding that a mother would typically share with their children.

i guess in the end, we, as fathers, must be very mindful and nurtering of the quality time shared between mothers and their children so these precious moments can be maximized to the fullest extent.

as for the actual segment, again it seems like we have a meek father with an opinionated mother and no real trust that one parent can do as good a job as the other. i think each parent brings different things to the table that children can benefit from.

this is all very interesting as the dialogue seems to be shifting from mr. mom to a more vibrant discussion of redefinition between the genders which is a much more all encompassing concept. this is very in tune with a segment regarding the roles of women and men that will air tomorrow on nbc with the president.

    keep up the good work...
