Some Parents Will Pay Any Price For Sleep

I had an interesting sleep discussion with a mother of two yesterday. Her youngest, 18 months, was an awesome "through the night sleeper" until a month ago. Now, he is waking up several times per night and this mother is drained and losing sleep.

As you know, sleep habits of our children is a very common parenting discussion. In our discussion, this at-home-mom mentioned that she had a friend who was battling sleep issues with their child as well. Faced with this dilemma, some parents are known to "Ferberize", based on Dr. Richard Ferber and his approach to teaching your baby how to sleep, or plow through Marc Weissbleuth's "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child."

We all know how important our sleep is, and some people are willing to pay a premium for it. Here is what I was told... this at-home-mom's friend hired professional help to combat their child's sleep challenges- at $500 per day for a 4 day minimum - a $2,000 investment! At that expense, this baby sleep magician must really be working some magic. I am not surprised that sleep experts & consultants go into people's homes to assist them with their children's sleep habits -I have read about a few of them and seen some ads. More surprised at the exorbitant cost for the service. Does this kind of thing occur because it's New York City (something in our water perhaps)? or, Does this high priced service occur throughout the country?

In other news, the NY Times shares another high priced service, The Breast Whisperer...

  1. As a parent whose child came three weeks early, we only had a crib mattress for him when he came home. Nothing else. I tell my friends who will soon be parents, "You really only need diapers, wipes and a certified lactation consultant ready to come to you."
