Asylum: More on Dads & Depression

You have probably read this statistic in the media lately: More than 10 percent of new dads become depressed before or after their baby's birth, according to recent findings by the American Medical Association.

I was fortunate to be at-home together with my wife for the first four months after our was born.  That made life much easier for both of us as we leaped into parenthood.  We were able to support each other and avoid isolation that some new parents face during the initial months.  So, when I see the statistic that 10% of new dads face depression it is hard for me to relate.  Additionally, those dads that fall into the "depressed" category, are usually not talking about it publicly as they are too busy facing the challenge.  For these reasons, it was unique to read this article on Asylum, billed as "a men's entertainment site for normal to slightly geeky guys. We try to be frat-boy sexism and find the brilliant side of lowbrow."   When Dads Get Depressed -- Who Says Postpartum Is Just for Women? by Chris Illuminati.  Illuminati breaks the mold & shares his story via a public forum of how his first four months were a living hell.

Takes balls and a certain kind of personality to admit feelings this raw and personal so other dads will know they are not alone.  Illuminati writes, "I can't be the only one reading the pamphlets about women and postpartum depression and noticing I have most of the symptoms. And hopefully those other guys will read this article and realize they're not alone."
